"The Willis Bros. are a tremendous resource"
-Monterey Herald

"Your columns are so beautiful. You should put all of these "essays" together into a book. The way you tie in surfing to philosophy, living a good life, serenity, and the inner life is sheer poetry full of richness."
-Karen

Solana Beach Jr Lifeguards / Del Mar Jr Lifeguards

Loving and concerned parents enrolling their children in ocean oriented water safety and ocean skills beach programs such as Willis brothers surfing or Del Mar and Solana Beach jr. lifeguards would more than likely be surprised to learn over 80% of all ocean rescues are performed by surfers.

This being said, when it comes to choosing a quality ocean safety/water skills program a premiere surfing program beats a jr. lifeguard program every time. What follows are five steps the Solana Beach jr. lifeguards and Del Mar jr. lifeguards can utilize to improve as well as update their water safety/skills ocean program.

1. Willis brothers surfing gives six dollars per student per day to support lifeguard services, jr. lifeguards (a much larger organization) should do the same. Money brought in from the hundreds of children taking the jr. lifeguard program could go to improve training and modernizing of lifeguards in Del Mar and Solana Beach. Willis brothers surfing contributes so should Solana Beach jr. lifeguards and Del Mar jr. lifeguards.
2. Willis brothers surfing instructor/student ratio ranges from 1/3 to 1/4 while jr. lifeguard instructor ratio is more like 1/20 if not 1/30 even when surfboards are present. Class sizes should be greatly reduced to accommodate a better instructor ratio or more instructors should be hired and present when children are in the ocean.
3. Solana Beach jr. lifeguards and Del Mar jr. lifeguards have experience in swimming zones --- surfing zones are another story. If Solana Beach jr. lifeguards and or Del Mar jr. lifeguard programs want to also teach surfing they should meet certain qualifications and standards that currently go beyond their expertise and understanding.
4. Solana Beach jr. lifeguards and Del Mar jr. lifeguards desperately need to update the archaic and outdated information they disseminate. An example would be their outdated position on what to do when caught in a rip current. The old gjust swim sideways doesnft always work and in addition many times is the exact opposite of what a swimmer should do to escape from a rip current.
5. Hire the Willis brothers who have performed many life saving rescues (including rescuing lifeguards) to update and improve not only Solana Beach jr. lifeguards and Del Mar jr. lifeguard programs but also Solana Beach and Del Mar lifeguard services as a whole.
